Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, especially in people who are physically active or spend long hours standing. It happens due to inflammation or microtears in the plantar fascia—a thick band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes and supporting the arch.

🔹 Causes / Risk Factors

  • Overuse (running, jumping, long standing)

  • Flat feet (pes planus) or high arches

  • Tight calf muscles or Achilles tendon

  • Obesity (increased load on the fascia)

  • Poor footwear without arch support

  • Occupations requiring prolonged standing/walking

🔹 Symptoms

  • Sharp heel pain, especially with the first steps in the morning or after rest

  • Pain decreases after warming up but worsens with prolonged standing/walking

  • Local tenderness at the medial calcaneal tubercle (heel bone attachment site)

  • Pain may increase when climbing stairs or after intense activity

🔹 Diagnosis

  • Clinical examination (tenderness at heel, positive Windlass test)

  • Imaging (usually not necessary, but ultrasound/MRI can rule out other causes)
