Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Definition

Tennis elbow is an overuse injury that causes pain and tenderness on the lateral epicondyle of the humerus (outer part of the elbow). It is mainly due to repetitive strain of the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) and other wrist extensors.


Causes / Risk Factors

Repetitive wrist extension or gripping activities.
Sports (e.g., tennis, squash, badminton).
Occupations (carpenters, painters, computer users).
Age group: common between 30–50 years.

Symptoms

Pain over the lateral epicondyle.
Pain increases with wrist extension, gripping, or lifting objects.
Decreased grip strength.
Localized tenderness.

Clinical Tests

Cozen’s Test: Pain on resisted wrist extension with elbow extended.
Mill’s Test: Pain on passive wrist flexion with elbow extended.  
Maudsley’s Test: Pain on resisted extension of the middle finger
